Summer Newsletter 2012

Prince Rock Dog Training & Agility Club

Summer Newsletter 2012
Issue 3/2012

We are a non-profit making club, run by volunteers for over 25 years, committed to promoting excellent animal welfare by helping members socialise and train their dogs.  Positive schooling methods of repetition, praise and reward are taught by qualified, experienced trainers during structured, enjoyable lessons in dog obedience, agility and flyball. We recommend owners practice the obedience techniques taught for about 5-10 minutes a day.

The Prince Rock Dog Training and Agility Club
 The Trainers

In the last newsletter we met Jenny McGinnes who teaches the first class on Mondays from 7.15 to 7.55pm

In this edition we introduce you to David Frost who takes the second lesson on a Monday.( 7.55 to 8.35pm)  By now, you will have learnt the basics:  sit, stand, stay and walking to heel.  David will build on this knowledge and take you to the next level  ie extend the ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ to the length of the lead, door control, weaving in and out of poles, and other commands. With fewer dogs in the class, David can tweek individual’s techniques and encourage both the owners and the dogs.

You will begin to see a marked improvement in your dog’s behaviour and both you and your dog will start to look forward to Monday evenings!

David has been with the club since joining with his own rescue dog Bob in 2003.  Together they progressed through the classes culminating in Bob passing his Gold Good Citizen Award.  David has been on the committee as Treasurer for 4 years now and it was by accident that Lou and Liz discovered that Dave had trained dogs many years ago.  They encouraged him to take a more active role in the club and to study to become a qualified trainer.  He is now the proud holder of Bronze, Silver and Gold Certificates, together with 3 additional behavioural courses.

We will meet Liz Riley, Head Trainer, who takes the third class on a Monday
( 8.35 to 9.15pm) in the next newsletter.

Agility

Although agility has resumed at Gables Farm, Plympton on Thursday evenings at 7 pm. the bad weather has meant that it has not safe to hold the class on wet evenings, of which there have been many!!  We have managed to bring out the fly ball on one occasion in July, so far.

All members with a dog over a year and under 10 years, who can recall their dog on command are eligible to participate.  More information can be obtained from any committee members, the website www.princerockdogtrainingclub.co.uk  or the blog linked from it.

If the weather is wet or doubtful, for safety reasons, it will be cancelled.
A decision will be made on the day at 6 o’clock.
Ring David on 01752 337846 or 0777 954 1153 for confirmation.

The War Horse Walk on Sunday 8th July

The weather was kind to us on this first club walk on the moors.  Although the starting point was difficult to find, 18 people joined Dave and Liz.  The walk took us up to Gutter Tor, down the path to Dittsworthy Warren House and back to the Scout Hut along Edward’s Path with a short detour to point out the Stone Row and Giant’s basin in the distance. All were ready for their lunch at the White Thorn at Shaugh Prior.  Dave had lots of facts to impart about the filming of The War Horse and some history of the warren.  Everyone enjoyed the day and went home to watch the Wimbledon Final.
